England is around two-third the size of Japan with the population of about 65 million. The capital is London. Although it is a member of EU, it uses the pound sterling (’) as the national currency. When David Cameronfs administration at the time held a national referendum in June 2016 to decide whether the country should stay in EU or leave, people of England chose to leave by a small margin as they were concerned about potential increase of tax and unemployment rate, as well as worsening of public safety after accepting refugees which is mandatory for EU countries. As Theresa Mayfs administration took over, it declared that the country is going to leave EU and started the process of its exit which is to be completed by March 2019. This will make a huge impact on not only England, but also the world economy. |

There are 30 World Heritage Sites in England, such as Westminster Palace and Stonehenge. Stonehenge, where I visited this time, is located near Salisbury, about 200km west of London. Large stone monuments stand alone in circle in the middle of the grass field, and it is said to have been built around 3100 B.C. Some say it was built as a place for worshipping the sun, and others insist that it was an ancient observatory, a worship place for the Celts, or a place for other purposes. |

There are around 66,000 cigarette shops in England and most are non-specialized stores. Many of them I saw were grocery shops with gFood & Wineh sign. The price of cigarettes is the second highest among EU countries after Norway and one of the most expensive in the world. Each shop is allowed to set their retail price and it is well above 1,000 yen a packet. A packet of Marlboro I purchased at a shop cost worth 2,000 yen. Unlike Japan where permission is required, it is free to sell cigarettes. Cigarette industry in England sells 47 billion cigarettes, which is less than around 30% of Japan, and 30% of sales come from hand-rolled cigarettes. As for packaging, it is mandatory to adopt gPlain Packagingh for cigarettes, and utensils are not allowed to be displayed therefore kept inside a cupboard or covered by curtains. The market is led by JTI and Imperial who are competing for the top spot, and these two companies dominate the market share. |
|
Note: What is Plain Packaging? Packaging of cigarettes is standardized with a simple plain design, in order to remove visual promotional materials from a packet as much as possible and discourage people from smoking by showing warnings and health hazards. |

When it was proposed in Australia in 2011, four major tobacco companies such as PMI and JTI filed a suit against Australian government. However, they lost the case. Since December 2012, all the cigarette packets in Australia have been standardized with olive brown in color, and logos and promotional texts have also been banned. The same regulation came into effect in Ireland and England in March 2015. Furthermore, France, Norway, Turkey and Taiwan are considering implementing this regulation. |

The smoking age in England is 18 years old and the same as drinking age. Smoking rate is 10% (male 10% female 10%). Smoking in the public facilities, hotels, restaurants, and cafes is prohibited by law like other European countries. Breaking the law will result in receiving a fine, however, smoking on the streets is still allowed and there were many cigarette butts on the streets despite ash trays were seen everywhere. The hotel I stayed was of course smoke free and you have to go to the designated smoking area by the entrance if you want to smoke, therefore I had to request to change my room to the one with balcony as smoking is not prohibited on balcony. |

Marlboro (PMI), Sterling (JTI), and JPS (IMP). Amber Leaf is the leading brand in the hand-rolled cigarette market. |
